How to get a real 8-bit look

Keep the colors low
The color limit is what sells the era more than anything else. This page opens at 12 colors — already lower than normal pixel art — and going down to 8 or even 4 makes the effect stronger, not worse. Old hardware could not show a photograph, and the charm of an 8-bit photo is watching a modern picture squeeze into that constraint.
Lock a real console palette
An auto palette gives you a reduced version of your own colors; a locked palette gives you 1989. Game Boy maps everything to four shades of green, NES to bold mid-80s console color, PICO-8 to a bright fantasy-console set. Locked palettes are the single biggest upgrade to authenticity, because the colors themselves carry the era.
Dithering stays on
Floyd–Steinberg dithering is on by default here, and for photos it should stay on. With 12 or fewer colors, faces and skies would band into hard stripes; dithering scatters two palette tones into a fine pattern that your eye reads as the missing in-between shades — exactly how real 8-bit games faked depth. Atkinson is the alternative flavor: lighter, sparser, a little cleaner on small grids.
Do not over-shrink the grid
Chunky is good, but a face still needs enough cells to be recognized — keep at least 48–64 pixels of width on the subject. If the photo has a busy background, crop close before converting so those cells are spent on the person, not the wallpaper.
Brightness and contrast first
These sliders run before color mapping, so they decide which tones survive. A contrast lift is the most reliable improvement to an image to 8bit conversion: it separates subject from background so shapes stay readable after the palette collapses. Dark photos want a brightness lift for the same reason.

What 8-bit actually means

The term comes from the 8-bit processors inside consoles like the NES and computers like the Commodore 64, but what people mean by the 8-bit look is really the color budget those machines imposed. The NES could choose from about 54 usable colors and show only a fraction of them per scanline region. The original Game Boy displayed exactly four shades of a single green. Artists of that era were not choosing a style — they were solving a constraint, and the solutions became the style.

An 8-bit photo converter recreates that constraint on purpose. It takes a modern photo with millions of colors and forces it through a palette a 1980s machine could actually display, at a resolution where individual pixels are visible. The two reductions together — color and resolution — are what make the result read instantly as retro rather than merely low-quality.

How the converter turns an image to 8bit

Two ingredients do the work. The first is the locked palette: every pixel in your photo is remapped to the nearest color in a fixed, era-correct set, so nothing survives that the target hardware could not have shown. The second is dithering: because a handful of colors cannot represent smooth shading, the converter interleaves pairs of palette colors in a fine error-diffusion pattern that your eye blends into intermediate tones.

That second ingredient is the one casual filters skip, and it is why their results look like posterized photos instead of game graphics. Real 8-bit art is full of dithering — check any Game Boy title screen — and a photo converted with strong dithering picks up the same woven, textured quality. Choosing an era palette

Each locked palette pulls the same photo toward a different machine and a different decade:

  • Game Boy — four shades of green, the most extreme and most recognizable. Portraits become moody handheld-era icons. Needs decent contrast in the source to work.
  • NES — the mid-80s living-room console range: strong reds and blues, warm skin approximations, no gradients. The most colorful genuinely 8-bit choice.
  • 1-bit — pure black and white, closer to early Macintosh than to consoles. With Atkinson dithering it produces striking, print-ready portraits.
  • PICO-8 — technically a modern fantasy console, but its 16 colors evoke the same era with friendlier results on varied subjects. The safe pick when the others fight your photo.

Dithering is the secret ingredient

If you compare a photo converted with and without dithering at 8 colors, the difference is dramatic. Without it, a face becomes flat bands: one tone for the cheek, a hard line, the next tone. With Floyd–Steinberg on, those bands dissolve into a fine weave that reads as continuous shading from arm’s length — the image gains apparent colors it does not actually contain.

For an 8 bit image the pattern itself is period-correct, so err on the side of more. The one adjustment worth trying is switching to Atkinson when a small grid looks oversaturated with texture: it diffuses less error, keeps highlights brighter, and leaves more clean, flat cells between the woven areas.

What to do with an 8-bit photo

Converted photos slot anywhere a normal image goes, but a few uses come up constantly. Profile pictures are the most popular: an 8-bit self-portrait is distinctive at avatar size in a way filtered photos are not, and the exported PNG stays sharp when platforms rescale it. Streamers convert scene shots for overlays and offline screens to give a channel a coherent retro identity — the locked-palette trick keeps every asset in the same four greens or NES tones.

Prints are the sleeper hit. Dithered 1-bit and Game Boy conversions look striking printed large, where the visible pattern becomes texture. 8-bit vs 16-bit — which look do you want?

The 16-bit era (SNES, Genesis) allowed dozens of colors on screen, subtler shading, and less visible dithering — closer to illustration than iconography.
