WEBP comes in two flavors. Lossless WEBP behaves like PNG: clean edges, exact colors, ideal for graphics. Pixel size
Web images are often modest in resolution — a 600 px product photo is plenty for a 64–128 cell grid, because the converter is about to throw resolution away anyway. Only very small thumbnails (under ~200 px) limit what you can do; at that point extra grid cells have nothing left to represent.
Colors and dithering
Match the settings to the content, not the container: graphics and illustrations want 8–16 colors with dithering off, photos want 16–24 with Floyd–Steinberg on. WEBP is just the wrapper — what is inside decides the recipe.

Lossy vs lossless WEBP — what it means for your pixel art

A WEBP file is either lossy or lossless, and the difference matters more to pixel art than to normal viewing. Lossless WEBP is functionally a smaller PNG: every pixel is exact, edges are clean, and flat colors are truly flat. Graphics saved this way quantize beautifully at low color counts.

Lossy WEBP compresses the way JPG does — by discarding detail the eye barely notices at full resolution. Quantization, unfortunately, notices. Around hard edges the compression leaves faint color smear, and when the palette shrinks to 16 colors those smeared tones can win palette slots or speckle the result. The fixes are the same as for JPG: use a slightly larger pixel size so each cell averages the noise away, cap colors harder so smear tones get merged out, and be a little cautious with dithering, which can amplify texture that was never in the original subject.

You usually cannot tell which flavor a file is from the name alone — so just convert it and read the result. Clean flats mean lossless-like behavior; speckle near edges means lossy, and one settings pass fixes it.

Transparency in WEBP works like PNG

WEBP carries a full alpha channel, and this converter treats it exactly as it treats PNG transparency: transparent stays transparent, opaque stays opaque, and the semi-transparent anti-aliased fringe around edges is snapped to hard cells. A transparent sticker or product cutout saved from the web converts into pixel art with a clean silhouette and no baked-in background, ready to place over anything.

Getting a good result from a web-sized image

Images saved from the web are smaller than camera photos, and that is almost never a problem here. Converting to pixel art means downscaling to a grid of 32–128 cells, so a 600–1000 px source has resolution to spare. What matters more than raw size:

  • Crop before converting — product shots and saved images often carry padding that wastes grid cells.
  • Match the grid to the remaining detail: 64–96 cells suits most web images; only go higher if the source is sharp and detailed.
  • For product shots on white, a locked palette like PICO-8 or Sweetie 16 gives a stylized result that hides compression flaws.
  • If the source is a tiny thumbnail, find the larger original when you can — more input detail always survives better.
  • One rights note: converting an image does not change who owns it. Only convert images you have permission to use.
