Getting the most out of a PNG

Transparency is preserved
PNG is the one everyday format with a full alpha channel, and the converter keeps it end to end. Upload a logo or cutout with a transparent background and every see-through pixel stays see-through in the pixel art result. Semi-transparent edge pixels — the soft anti-aliased fringe around most logos — are snapped to either solid or transparent, which is exactly what pixel art wants: hard edges, no halo.
Lossless input, clean edges
Because PNG is lossless, there are no compression artifacts to fight. Hard edges stay hard and flat color areas stay perfectly flat, so quantization has clean data to work with. This is why a PNG converts more crisply than the same artwork saved as a JPG — nothing was smeared before the converter ever saw it.
Pixel size
For icons and logos, 32–64 cells is usually right: low enough that the grid reads as a deliberate style, high enough that the mark stays recognizable. Detailed illustrations can go to 96–128. Step the slider down until the shape tightens, then stop one step before it falls apart.
Colors
A logo usually carries very few real colors, so a cap of 8–16 gives a bold, clean result without visible loss. Raise the count only if the artwork has gradients you want to keep — and consider dithering instead, which fakes the in-between shades with fewer colors.
Dithering
Leave it off for flat logos and icons — the scatter pattern reads as noise on hard-edged art. Turn on Floyd–Steinberg only when the PNG contains photographic content or smooth gradients that band when the palette shrinks.

Needs a tweak first

  • Photos saved as PNG — they convert fine, but treat them like photos: crop tight and allow more colors

Why PNG is the best format to convert to pixel art

Every pixel art conversion is a fight for information: the converter throws away resolution and colors on purpose, so whatever quality problems the source has get amplified, not hidden. PNG starts that fight with two advantages. It is lossless, meaning the file contains exactly the pixels the designer saved with no compression smear, and it carries an alpha channel, meaning transparency is real data rather than a white box pretending to be empty.

In practice this is why the same logo converted from a PNG and from a JPG can look like the work of two different tools. The JPG version arrives with faint ringing around every edge — leftover compression noise — and the quantizer dutifully turns that noise into stray, wrongly colored pixels. The PNG version arrives clean, quantizes clean, and exports clean. If you have a choice of source file, converting png to pixel art is always the better route for graphics.

How transparency survives the conversion

A transparent PNG has four channels per pixel: red, green, blue, and alpha. During conversion the color channels go through the normal pipeline — downscale to your grid, then quantize to the palette — while the alpha channel is resolved per cell. Fully transparent regions stay fully transparent. Fully opaque regions stay opaque. The interesting cells are the ones in between: the anti-aliased fringe every modern logo carries around its edges.

Pixel art does not do soft fringes, so the converter snaps each of those cells to solid or transparent based on its coverage. The result is a hard, clean silhouette — the same look a pixel artist would produce by hand. That is also why the exported PNG drops seamlessly onto any color background: there is no baked-in white halo, because there was never a white background at all.

One thing to watch: large soft drop shadows are made almost entirely of semi-transparent pixels, so they either vanish or harden into a dark outline. If the shadow matters, flatten the PNG onto its final background before converting; if the mark matters, convert the transparent version and add a shadow afterward.

Turning a logo or icon into pixel art

Logos are the happiest input this converter gets. They already use few colors, they already rely on strong shapes, and they almost always live in PNG format. A typical mark converts well at 48–64 cells with a 8–16 color cap and dithering off. The result reads instantly as a retro badge — useful for stream overlays, Discord server icons, game jam splash screens, or just a novel take on brand assets.

Two adjustments cover most logo problems. If thin strokes or small lettering break apart, raise the pixel size until the thinnest stroke is at least one full cell wide — text needs roughly 5 cells of height to stay legible. If brand colors shift after conversion, lower the color count; with fewer slots to fill, the quantizer locks onto the dominant brand colors instead of averaging them against anti-aliasing tones.

Screenshots are natively PNG on nearly every platform, and interface art converts surprisingly well: big flat panels, bold text, and high contrast are exactly what quantization likes. Crop to the region you care about before uploading — a full-desktop screenshot spends most of its cells on empty space — and keep the grid on the larger side, 96–128, so text and controls stay identifiable.

From png to pixel — a quick workflow that works

For a first pass that usually lands close to done:

  • Start with the largest, cleanest PNG you have — more source data always helps, and it never hurts.
  • Crop to the subject so no cells are wasted on empty margin.
  • Set pixel size by subject: 32–48 for simple icons, 48–64 for logos, 96–128 for screenshots and illustrations.
  • Cap colors at 8–16 for flat art; raise toward 24 only for photographic content.
  • Keep dithering off for graphics; switch it on only if gradients band.
