Planning the block list
- Width in blocks
- Width is the one number that drives the whole project: total blocks = width × height, and height follows your image ratio automatically. A 64-wide square image is 4,096 blocks; doubling the width to 128 quadruples it to 16,384. The slider runs from 16 to 192 blocks, and the total updates live as you drag, so you can watch cost and detail trade off in real time.
- The locked block palette
- Colors are matched against a fixed palette of solid, survival-obtainable blocks — wool, stone, dirt, gold, and similar full blocks. The palette is locked on purpose: every color in the preview corresponds to a block you can actually place, so the material list never asks for something that does not exist in the game. If a photo converts muddy, raise its contrast first.
- Reading the material list
- The list is sorted in descending order, so the first few rows are most of your build. If white wool tops the list at 3,900 blocks, that is 61 stacks of 64 — plan your sheep farm around that number before anything else. Blocks near the bottom often appear fewer than a dozen times; carry those accents in a single hotbar slot.
- Blueprint PDF
- The blueprint export puts the full block layout and the complete material list on a printable A4 page, with the dimensions in blocks and the grand total at the top. How this minecraft image converter counts every block
This page runs the same engine as our Minecraft pixel art generator, but the focus here is the plan, not the picture. Every pixel in the converted result is exactly one block in the world, so the math is exact rather than estimated: a 96×54 conversion of a widescreen photo is 5,184 blocks, full stop. As the converter matches colors, it tallies each block type and sorts the totals in descending order, so the material list always leads with the blocks that matter most.
That count is the difference between a build you finish and a build you abandon. Builders who convert an image to Minecraft blocks by eye routinely underestimate material cost by half, run out of the dominant color at 60 percent, and quit. Reading the list before breaking ground turns a gamble into a checklist.
Estimating build effort before you start

A workable rule of thumb: under 5,000 blocks is a solo evening or two, 5,000 to 20,000 wants a friend or a creative-mode session, and anything past 20,000 should be treated like a server event with assigned roles.
Planning a large build zone by zone
Do not build a big layout row by row across the full width — you will lose your place and discover a misaligned column three hundred blocks later. Break the blueprint into zones and finish each one completely before starting the next.
- Divide the printed blueprint into 16×16 zones — the same footprint as a Minecraft chunk, easy to pace out in the world using the chunk-border overlay (F3+G on Java).
- Place throwaway marker blocks at every zone corner first, so each zone starts from a verified anchor instead of a count from the far edge.
- Fill one zone at a time and check it against the blueprint before anchoring the next — an error caught inside a 256-block zone costs minutes, not days.
- Cross finished zones off the printed PDF; on a shared server, assign whole zones to each builder so seams only need checking along zone borders.
Gathering materials in survival
The material list is sorted with the biggest counts on top, and that is your farming order. Wool usually dominates a converted photo: set up a small pen of dyed sheep per color, since dyed sheep regrow dyed wool and one shearing cycle beats crafting wool from string every time.
Stone and concrete-toned blocks are quarry work — bring efficiency tools and run furnaces in parallel while you keep digging. For the rare accent blocks at the bottom of the list, trading with villagers or looting a shipwreck is often faster than farming eight of something. Export the CSV, split the rows between players, and nobody gathers the same stack twice.
